OVIK has recently supplied a fleet of PHOENIX vehicles to Avon & Somerset Police. Head of Operations, Chief Superintendent Lawrie Lewis:

What is PHOENIX? Armoured Land Rover Land Rover Snatch
Following OVIK's success designing, building and then delivering 60 of its PANGOLIN Armoured Public Order vehicles to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and in the wake of last summer's riots in the UK, we were approached by a number of UK police forces to scope the possibility of re-cycling former British Army (UK MOD) SNATCH Land Rovers into cost effective Public Order Vehicles. Upgraded and re-fitted to suit customers' requirements and budgets. Working closely with various UK constabularies, OVIK evolved the R-OVIK concept vehicle - the first in a line of vehicles known as the PHOENIX - resurrected from what were essentially scrapped former MOD vehicles. OVIK has since established itself as the leading supplier of upgraded/enhanced and re-fitted fomer SNATCH vehicles.

Following, in some cases, up to twenty years of hard labour, the average 'end of life' SNATCH is usually in a sorry state. OVIK selects vehicles for upgrade as carefully as possible but, inevitably a full refurbishment and upgrade to PHOENIX standard takes up to 340 man hours. In addition to a full engine and transmission re-life OVIK significantly upgrades all brakes and suspension in line with the VSAG 08 and 13H compliant systems on PANGOLIN. The handling and overall performance of the old V8 DEFENDER is transformed. A
OVIK adds a full 'public order' body kit including hardening of all doors, wings bonnet etc. The vehicle is painted in fire resistant paint and internal and external fire suppression systems are integrated to dampen the effects from direct petrol bomb attack. Finally OVIK installs a suite of attack protected emergency /police lighting and a siren system before installing the police tactical radio system. Result... a highly cost-effective public order vehicle and arguably one of the most purposeful looking DEFENDERS ever produced.

Battle Scarred and Worn Out
This image depicts a relatively typical SNATCH DEFENDER upon arrival at the OVIK facility. This vehicle, a 1997 V8 petrol DEFENDER, was bullet and fragmentation scarred. The image shows the vehicle with a replacement set of standard Land Rover wings; these are replaced with fully composite and hardened wings and bonnet designed to withstand sustained physical attack.
Upon arrival vehicles are immediately stripped down to the base chassis. All suspension is removed along with engine and transmission - ready for replacement reconditioned items. Of paramount importance is a full armour inspection to ensure that the vehicles maintain full protective integrity to level B6+ / STANAG level 1+.

New armoured glass, new multi-layered intumescent paint scheme, fully uprated and upgraded suspension (all round), reconditioned V8 engine, reconditioned transmission, run-flat tyres, composite bonnet and wings, fully hardened and galvanised public order body kit, fire-suppression systems (internal and external) integrated emergency sirens and lighting, integrated police tactical communications, integrated local situational awareness camera system with full record capabilty, fully fire proofed fuel system.

Produced to Customers' Specifcation, Requirements and Budget
The vehicle depicted (above right) is the highest possible specification upgrade. To all intents and purposes - it is a virtually new vehicle. OVIK issues a full one year parts warranty for all automotive components and refurbished elements of the vehicle.
Available in left and right hand drive configutaion. Petrol V8 engine - or Land Rover diesel engine options available.

Ultimately, PHOENIX is designed to be cost effective and OVIK aims to work in conjunction with the customer to scope the appropriate specification to meet the customer's operational needs and budgets.

LINE-X PAXCON Spall Liners
OVIK utilises a LINE-X PAXCON spall lining system in PHOENIX and other armoured platforms. The spray-on system acts as either an external spall suppressor or in internal spall liner - reducing behind-armour effects of spall.
Used externally - LINE-X products also give PHOENIX and incredibly durable finish - ideal for public order duties.
